The popular prescription weight-loss drug Belviq (generic name lorcaserin) was made by Eisai Inc. The purpose of the drug was to help obese people and those experiencing weight-related health issues curb their hunger. An alarming U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) safety trial concluded that the drug could increase the risk of several different types of cancer. These include lung, colorectal, and pancreatic cancers. As a result, the FDA issued a full recall of Belviq in February 2020.
Weight-loss drugs are not typically known for their safety; unfortunately, Belviq is no exception. In a five-year, double-blind study of 12,000 patients, individuals taking Belviq were more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than those taking a placebo (sugar pill). The FDA stated, “A range of cancer types was reported, with several different types of cancers occurring more frequently in the lorcaserin group,” including:
Belviq is a weight loss drug that probably should never have been on the market, and it’s important that the manufacturers are held accountable. Those suffering from cancer caused by Belviq deserve compensation.
